Structured (rewarded) referral program
A formal program that rewards existing customers for bringing in new ones.
A referral program with explicit rules and a reward (credit, discount, or cash) paid out for a successful referral, rather than relying on customers to refer organically with no structure behind it.
Why this ring
Works well once the product has a clearly shareable value proposition; the hard part isn't running the program, it's designing the reward so it doesn't cannibalize margin on customers who would have converted anyway.
SaaS fit
Works across B2B and B2C, but comes more naturally to B2C / prosumer SaaS where the buying decision is personal rather than committee-based.
How to apply it
When to apply: You already have satisfied customers (NPS promoters) and a product you can describe to someone else in a single sentence.
First steps: Set up a simple two-sided reward (both referrer and referred get something), place the ask at a moment of proven satisfaction — right after a win, not on a generic landing page — and track the quality of referred leads, not just the count.
Pitfalls: A reward that cannibalizes margin regardless of the referred customer's LTV will bleed money quietly for months before anyone notices; single-sided rewards (only the referrer gets paid) also convert noticeably worse than two-sided ones.
Metrics to watch: Number of activated referrals, referral-lead conversion rate, and LTV of referral-sourced customers versus other channels.
